Discipline Equals Freedom: Follow It Before You Feel It
“Every habit, Duhigg found, has three parts.”From Principle 6, Beyond the Stethoscope, by Dr Bakahika Leonard Kururagireh
“What has changed is that I know what to return to, and I do not wait to feel disciplined before I return.”From Principle 6, Beyond the Stethoscope, by Dr Bakahika Leonard Kururagireh
Beyond the Stethoscope is available from 10 November 2026. About the book →
Beyond FMF → Kingdom Mindset
From survival to building
In the book, FMF means Feed My Family: “my shorthand for entrepreneurship that exists only to cover household survival.” As Dr Bakahika writes, “Entrepreneurship should never be only about FMF, Feed My Family. It should be about impact.”
This week’s step: FMF lives in stress loops: a hard day, then whatever numbs it. A builder keeps the loop before the feeling arrives.
This week’s health topic
Habits: the loop that runs your day
- Every habit has three parts: a cue (the trigger), a routine (what you do) and a reward. Keep the cue and the reward, and swap the routine.
- In one study, a new daily habit took about 66 days on average to feel automatic, with a wide range from 18 to 254 days. Missing a single day did not undo progress.
- Make the good routine easy: lay things out the night before and keep temptations out of reach.
- Immunisation: every dose on your child’s card, on time. Polio is prevented by vaccines. Our immunisation clinic runs every Friday morning.

This week’s challenge
Tonight, lay out tomorrow’s clothes and put your phone in another room. Two minutes. Do it again tomorrow.
Check in with us on WhatsApp on Friday and tell us how it went.
Sunday reflection
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Romans 12:2 (NIV)
